Destinations

Copenhagen, Denmark is one of the easiest European capitals to fall in love with.  The sights of old buildings, cobbled streets and the tower - and turret-dotted skyline lend fairy-tale charm-this was, after all, the home of author Hans Christian Andersen.  But make no mistake. This is a thoroughly modern city with international clout.

Bergen, Norway has played a crucial role in Norwegian history and culture since Olav the Good founded the city in 1070. Perched between the sea and seven hills, Bergen has witnessed Vikings setting sail on voyages of exploration, trade, and war. In the Middle Ages, its old port was a major trading hub for the Hanseatic League, the band of Germanic merchants whose trading empire encircled the Baltic and North Seas. In the 19th century, Bergen was home to such cultural luminaries as the virtuoso violinist Ole Bull and the composer Edvard Grieg.  The city retains much of its 18th- and 19th-century charm. Visitors to Bergen will encounter a city that offers a heady blend of natural beauty, history and culture.

Ålesund, Norway, a quaint fishing town of approximately 45,000 in western Norway, has been called Norway’s most beautiful city. A fire in 1904 destroyed much of it, resulting in the town being rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style—also known as Jugendstil—that was popular around the turn of the 20th century.  A year after the fire, Norway gained its independence from Sweden, which led to a  campaign to build a "Norwegian town" to mark the creation of the new nation. The colorful buildings feature castle-like turrets and spires with intricate facades of ornamental flowers, gargoyles and Viking-inspired decorations.

Seydisfjordur, Iceland is surrounded on three sides by stunning mountain vistas and open to the sea, this idyllic harbor town boasts the largest number of  early 19th century preserved wood buildings in Iceland. From its splendid waterfalls to its peaceful lagoon and deep fjord, explore the natural beauty of this small haven.

Akureyri, Iceland, is where it’s possible to explore some of the country’s most memorable landscapes, starting with Akureyri’s own fjord, Eyjafjörður, where you'll find several museums (including the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art  Museum), fishing  villages like Grenivík and plenty of dramatic mountain scenery. Farther afield are the island of Grímsey, the volcanic wonderland of Lake Mývatn and a whole host of waterfalls, gorges, churches and saga sites.

Isafjordur, Iceland, The town of Ísafjördur is the municipal centre of the West Fjords peninsula. The West Fjords are Iceland's least populated region, with 9,600 inhabitants in the area of 9,520 km. Isafjördur (population 3,500) formerly one of Iceland's main trading posts, was granted municipal status in 1886. Some of Iceland's oldest and best-preserved buildings, dating from the 18th century, are located in Ísafjördur.

The town is still predominantly a fishing centre. A vigorous and varied cultural and artistic scene flourishes in the town as well. Mountains surround Ísafjördur on the three sides and the sea on the other. The ancient settlement site of Eyri downtown is enclosed by the narrow Skutulsfjördur fjord, which shelters the harbor in all weathers.

Reykjavik, Iceland is laid-back and effortlessly cool, the world's most northerly capital is like nowhere else on earth. With geothermal water pumping through its veins and a staggering  backdrop of gnarly lava fields, majestic glaciers and rainbow-colored houses, Reykjavík is famous for its natural wonders and dramatic scenery. But what is less well known is that the  diminutive Icelandic city has cultural  offerings to rival many destinations twice its size.

Torshavn, Faroe Islands is named after Thor, the Norse god of Thunder, and flanked by the large mountains Húsareyn and Kirkjubøreyn, the Faroese capital is at once dramatic, peaceful, quaint and modern. It’s a charming and fascinating place to explore, thanks to an abundance of turf-roofed houses, historical sites, and an attractive harbor area that still processes fish and produces wool goods.

Shetland Islands (Lerwick), Scotland, are the most northerly of the British Isles and consist of over one hundred islands, of which a mere 16 are inhabited. Lerwick is the capital of the archipelago. Located on the eastern shore of Mainland, the largest Shetland Island, the town was largely developed by Dutch herring fisherman in the 17th century. The islands are renowned for their superb crafts ranging from woolen and cashmere knitwear to intricate lace shawls and fine jewelry.
